Which exercise is best for sculpting and toning the upper arms?

Q: Hi Rylan, The video for sculpting and toning the upper arms is great and I'm sure it will help many out with their arms. I have been doing these for a long while now and as I said I'm consistent with my workouts. But to be honest I haven't found much of a difference. Yes my arms are stronger but the flab is still there...

A: Hi Silvia,

Yes, that’s because just doing one arm toning exercise is NOT enough.

I think that’s what women struggle with more than anything.

You cannot expect one or two arm exercises to completely eliminate the arm flab. That’s why Go Sleeveless incorporates so many more exercises to hit every possible area of the arms.

Remember, working the biceps and shoulders are so important in toning your overall arms as well, and most women ignore these areas when they are working on toning their upper arms.

You have to start thinking about the body as a whole as opposed to working only one little area to eliminating one little trouble spot.

Yes, Go Sleeveless eliminates your sagging upper arms, but not by excluding the rest of your body.

This would be considered spot reducing, and spot reducing doesn't work - it misses about 90% of the equation..

Remember this formula for getting rid of all your problem areas:

  • Burn tons of fat

  • Focus extra attention on sculpting the problem area

  • Include exercises that will burn fat and tone muscle on your entire body

  • Crank up your metabolism.

That is the only sure way to eliminate flabby arms – or any other problem area for that matter.

Whether your trouble spot is muffin top, love handles, thunder thighs, chubby calves, etc., etc., it makes no difference – the formula is still the same.

Hopefully that clears it up for you.

I realize one or two exercises is simply not enough to transform your body like the complete Go Sleeveless system does, but not everyone is going to be able to buy the Go Sleeveless system. Some can't afford it, and others are just not comfortable buying anything off the internet.

For those people who are saving up and sitting around and waiting, I want to give them something for free so they can get started today.

That’s why I’ll often post free exercise videos or quick workout programs; because what I care about most is getting women healthier and happier with their bodies.

If my income has to suffer as a result, then so be it.

I truly believe that what goes around comes around, so I try to be as generous as I can in the hope that more women will trust me as a result and take advantage of my services.

Exercises to tone and sculpt your arms...

Anyway, as this exercise is the one I received the most questions about, here is a demonstration video to show you exactly how it's done.

Performed correctly, the Bench Dip is one of the best arm sculpting exercises imaginable, and you should always strive to perform the 'advanced' version demonstrated in this short clip. Of course, you don't need to start with that, but I want you to push yourself so you can do the straight leg version as it will have a much great impact on toning your arms.

International Women's Day - Free Workout

In celebration of International Women's Day I have put together a beginner's workout routine that I am making available to all women, free of charge.

This workout program only requires one piece of equipment - a $10 exercise band (resistance band), and is a great program if you are just getting back into an exercise program after not doing one for a while, or for those who might be starting for the first time.

It is designed to be a whole-body fat loss program that will take you only a few minutes a day, and is a great system to use for about 2-3 weeks.

If you haven't started Go Sleeveless yet, this is a great way to prep your body and get some results quickly before you tackle the full Go Sleeveless System.

For those of you who are currently using the Go Sleeveless program, you are still more than welcome to try this workout for some more variety, but is not required.

Gwyneth Paltrow's Workout Critiqued

Gwyneth Paltrow is back in the spotlight again, and as many of you know, her workout was recently featured on Oprah’s website.

The video clip features Gwyneth and her personal trainer demonstrating her two hour per day, six day per week, marathon workout routine.

The program consists of multiple exercises for toning her arms by using an elaborate elastic band set-up, resistance-free exercises, and a tiny set of 3 lbs weights for the remainder of the strength training routine.

This is in addition to a 40 minute ‘cardio dance’ routine that looks like something out of “Riverdance”.

Now, before you get excited and think “I can get a body like Gwyneth Paltrow if I just follow her workout program” - think again.

Gwyneth Paltrow's workout encompasses all that is wrong with celebrity fitness programs, and celebrity personal trainers.

It is a total disaster in every sense of the word.

Her workout program is fraught with physique ruining mistakes, and her trainer is completely out to lunch as to how the female body actually responds to exercise.

In a word, her program is…crap.

Due to the popularity of Gwyneth (and Oprah) this simple video clip has polluted the minds of women all over the world who will now think they need to workout for 12 hours a week just to get a lean and toned body.

And thanks to Gwyneth’s trainer, many women also now believe that if they lift 3 pound weights they’ll develop big, ugly, bulging muscles.

This is not Gwyneth Paltrow’s fault, in fact, she probably has no clue the damage she is causing to herself.

However, I’m not about to let you make the same mistakes.

The mistakes Gwyneth Paltrow is making in her fitness program, and how to make sure you don’t fall into the same trap.

Mistake Number One - Gwyneth’s workouts are too long.

At two hours, 6 days per week, the poor girl is going to run herself into exhaustion just to try and maintain her body. She has young children to look after, and an incredibly busy career that requires constant travel and long hours. Burnout is on it’s way if it hasn’t struck yet.

When your workout creeps past an hour in duration, your body starts to release hormones that cause decreased muscle tone, increased fat storage, and increased stress. It doesn’t take long for this to lead to exhaustion, stress, anxiety, lethargy, weight gain, and a whole host of other problems.

Not to mention it also takes a significant amount of time out of your day, and away from your family and the activities that you would rather be doing.

Who wants to spend 2 hours a day working out?

I certainly don’t, and I hope you don’t either!

My Solution - Keep your workouts short and sweet.

1 hour is the absolute maximum time you need to be training unless you are a competitive athlete.

Keep your intensity high. You should have a sweat going within the first 5 minutes, and you should be pushing yourself for the entire duration so you are working hard without long rest periods. The harder you work, the less time you need to spend.

You can work moderately hard for 2 hours, or you can work really hard for 20 minutes.

Pssst...take the 20 minutes.

Mistake Number Two - Gwyneth uses light weights or no weights at all, for fear of bulking up.

This is a direct quote from Gwyneth’s trainer “no woman should lift more than three pounds…less weights equals less bulk”.

Then I guess she shouldn’t be lifting her children anymore then should she? Not to mention she should never carry a shopping bag, a heavy purse, do a pushup, or even bend down to pick something up off the floor.

If it's true that women should never lift more than 3 pound weights, then all these activities are out, and you had better find yourself a nice assistant who will carry out your everyday tasks for you.

This type of ignorance is absolutely astonishing, especially coming from someone who should know better.

Obviously her trainer has absolutely no concept of physiology and how the female body responds to exercise.

In fact, in the same video, Gwyneth states how she carries her son in her left arm, and how that arm is much more toned and defined. In fact, her trainer has her spend more time working on her right arm to stop it from sagging.

Does anyone else see the irony here?

In one sentence her trainer is saying she should never lift more than three pounds, and in the other, Gwyneth states that the arm that is more toned and defined is the one that she lifts her thirty pound child with.

Heavy weights mean lean and sculpted arms, light weights mean saggy and droopy arms, period.

My solution - Lift weights that are as heavy as you can handle for 6-12 repetitions.

I have worked with many women who can lift incredible amounts of weight, and still have a lean, toned, and sexy body, and are still under 120lbs.

They aren’t big and bulky, and they aren’t gaining weight.

You can put a man and a woman on the exact same program, lifting the same amount of weight, and two very different results will occur: The man will build large and bulky muscles, and the woman will lean out and become more defined.

If you neglect to lift heavy weights, then you won’t build the lean muscle tissue that is so important for giving you a high metabolism and making your body burn off calories while you rest. This means you will have to constantly restrict your diet and starve yourself because your body simply will not be capable of getting rid of extra calories.

Remember - heavy is a relative term. Heavy is considered any weight that YOU can handle for 12 repetitions or less - and if that’s only three pounds for now, then so be it. As you get stronger and you can lift more weight, then do it.

Mistake Number Three - Gwyneth is not utilizing the after-burn effect.

Something incredible happens when you work out with heavy weights and high intensity: You create a shift in your metabolism that stokes the calorie burning fire. You force your body to increase the amount of calories it burns during your workout , and more importantly, during the entire day.

When you work hard, you ignite your fat-burning furnace for the rest of the day, and you are torching away body fat and calories even while you sit at your computer. This is the after-burn effect.

This does not happen with low or medium intensity workouts like Gwyneth Paltrow’s.

My solution - Workout at a high intensity to take full advantage of the after-burn effect.

Set yourself a time limit of half an hour and make every minute count. Don’t take long rest periods, make sure to lift weights that are as heavy as you safely can handle for 6-12 reps, and do short duration, high intensity interval cardio training. This is exactly how the workout programs in Go Sleeveless are set up, and that's exactly why they are so effective.

By following these three steps you will ensure that you turn on the after-burn effect and transform you body into a 24/7 fat burning machine.

Here's what to do.

Here’s a simple workout to get you started sculpting your entire body. This will take you about 20 minutes, you don’t need any fancy equipment, and it will get you better results than Gwyneth Paltrow’s workout.

Skipping 3 minutes continuous + 2 minutes of alternating between 15 seconds as fast as you can + 15 seconds slow.

1a) Weighted Step-Ups (20 steps up and down)
2a) Forward and Reverse Lunge (10 lunges front and back - each leg)
3a) 2 minutes of continuous skipping


1b) Plie Squat to Overhead Press (8-10 reps)
2b) Good Morning with Forward Reach (8-10 reps)
3b) 2 minutes of continuous skipping


1c) Swiss Ball Wall Pushups (8-10 reps)
2c) Left-To-Right Moving Elevated Pushups (8-10 reps each side)
3c) 2 minutes of continuous skipping


1d) Band Curl To Press (8-10 reps each arm)
2d) Bent Over Reverse Band Flyes (8-10 reps)
3d) 2 minutes of continuous skipping

There you have it. This better than Gwyneth Paltrow's workout routine will get you burning tons of body fat, revving up your metabolism, and sculpting your entire body in less than half the time that Gwyneth spends swinging her 3 lb weights around.

There isn't just one that's better than the rest; it takes quite a few exercises that work various muscles to get the absolute best overall effect for sculpting the arms.

But instead of me preaching to you about which arm toning exercises I recommend, why don't you let me know which exercises you have the most difficulty with?

Also, I should point out, that I do not agree with Jessica's Matthew's prescription for 30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise three times per week. Not if you want quick results anyway.

Remember, high intensity interval training can cut your cardio time by more than 50% and give you better results. It also boosts your metabolism and makes you burn more calories while you are sitting at your desk.

Moderate intensity cardio for long durations is DEAD.

Michelle Obama's Arms Workout

Michelle Obama has been thrust into the public eye now that she is the new First Lady of the United States.

There are probably few other women in North America that will be forced to Go Sleeveless as much as Michelle will in the coming years.

How many times have you made excuses for not going out because you were unhappy with the way you looked or were having an 'off' day?

I know I've had my share. I've turned down going for a pint with my mates because I just didn't want to be seen in public (this is not something that just women go through).

But what happens when you are in a position like Michelle Obama, and you can't simply shrug off the invitations? It's not as simple as just throwing something on, doing your hair, and hoping no one will notice...there are going to be camera's pointed from every possible angle just waiting to catch an unflattering shot.

So how does a woman like Michelle Obama keep in shape, and get arms that are worthy of the cover of Vogue?

And how does she find time being a 44 year old mother of two, and arguably, now the busiest woman in the United States?

Momlogic asked Michelle Obama about her toned arms and workout routine. “I go to the gym three times a week — as often as I can, really. I work with a fabulous trainer for about an hour each session. We do a lot of cardio and weight training. For me, exercise is more than just physical — it’s therapeutic.”

That is one way of doing it, but can it be done in less time and without a trainer?

You bet!

You don't need to spend an hour a day working out, and you don't need to bore yourself to tears on a treadmill or elliptical to get a decent workout in, and you don't need a trainer with you to push you to the limits each day.

Look, if the busiest woman in America can have toned and sexy arms, then YOU can have toned and sexy arms. It's that simple.

Here is a quick no-weight workout that I recommend for getting toned and sculpted arms like Michelle Obama.

Michelle Obama's Arms Workout

2 minutes of jogging in place

Rest 60 Seconds

Superset #1
15 No-Jump Burpees
15 Step-Ups
15 Deep Plie Squats

Rest 60 seconds

Superset #2
Alternating Plank - 16x6 seconds holds
Narrow Grip Incline Pushups - As many as you can
Chair Dips - As many as you can

Rest 60 Seconds

Repeat entire circuit twice more

This whole workout will take you about 18-20 minutes, you don't need a single piece of equipment, and you can do it with only about 6 square feet of floor space.

This workout will get you arms like Michelle Obama's, in half the time.

How To Get Toned And Sexy Arms In 3 Simple Steps

Although every woman wants to have washboard abs and a tight butt, how often are you really going to show these body parts off to the rest of the world?

With trips to the beach aside, probably not all that often right?

So what’s the body part that grab’s people’s attention and let’s them know that you have an incredible body?

What body part stands out and says “I am HOT!” without having to walk around in skimpy clothing, baring a bunch of skin?

The arms of course!

Think of it this way: whether you are dressed for the office, the gym, or a night out on the town, your arms are out there for everyone to see.

I’m not going to sugar coat this and tell you that people aren’t judging you, because the sad fact is, they ARE.

And it’s your arms that tell people in 3 seconds or less whether you have a great body or not.
So how can you get toned and sexy arms like Angeline Jolie, Madonna, or Kelly Ripa?

Better yet, how can you get toned and sexy arms like these stars, but WITHOUT a personal chef, dietician, trainer, and herd of assistants at your beck and call?

Follow these three simple steps and you will be well on your way:

Step 1 - Build The Muscle

Most women spend waaaay too much time on long cardio sessions, killing themselves trying to lose an extra pound or two, but never spending enough time with a serious strength training plan.
Here’s the problem with this course of action: If you only ever focus on losing body fat, your arms will look worse!

Even some of the leanest women in showbiz have bat wing arms and droopy skin because they have neglected to build and tone the muscles in their arms.

Fitness Expert Interviews Rylan Duggan

Hey folks, here is the rest of the interview with that was done with me last week (the interviewer has asked to remain anonymous until their article is published, at which time I can reveal their identity)...

As promised, I’m back again today with the juicy details of my interview with Canada’s ‘Problem Part Pro’ fitness expert, Rylan Duggan, and our discussion about his new Go Sleeveless system that promises better results than plastic surgery.

This morning at 12:01 am was the start of his very short and secret 72 hour sale where he is offering a massive bundled package of all his fitness products for over 90% off. Did you get your copy yet?

So I am sure you are wondering, just like I was, how Rylan can offer better results than plastic surgery with his Go Sleeveless system. After all, he claims to be able help women eliminate sagging and flabby arms, muffin top, mommy belly, and so much more, with a simple system that only requires 90 minutes of work per week. It sounds too good to be true, but after interviewing him, it all makes perfect sense, and I can see that he is definitely on to something here, so lets get to the details of my interview with him…

Q: Rylan, your program states that your customers will be able to get better results than plastic surgery! How is that possible? This must be a scam! It’s simply too good to be true.

Rylan: I know how incredible in sounds, but trust me, this is no scam. Yes, you will get better results with Go Sleeveless than if you went under the knife, it’s no trick, and there is no fine print.

Let me explain how this is possible…

If you were to go in for plastic surgery for liposuction, the most fat they could take out of you is 4-6lbs (or roughly 2-3 kilos). Any more than this, and the risk of serious complications skyrockets due to the chance of excessive bleeding, being under anesthetic too long, and other such factors.

After the surgery, you will experience significant pain and swelling from anywhere from 6-12 weeks depending on how fast your body recovers. You will also have to take potentially harmful medications to handle the pain from this invasive surgery - have you SEEN the way they ram that sucker in and out of people’s bodies on shows like Extreme Makeover? Not exactly delicate! Many women are also confined to their easy-chair for over a month to ensure that they don’t cause any further damage to the tissues while their body heals.

Furthermore, whenever there is trauma to the tissue, the muscles in that area essentially shut-off and go into protective mode. This coupled with the fact that you aren’t able to exercise and move around results in muscle wasting, a lowering of your metabolism, and fat gain.

By the time the full results from your surgery are seen, it has been more than 8 weeks, your metabolism is slower, you’ve gained body fat, you’ve lost muscle tissue and tone, your fitness has decreased, you’ve been taking harmful painkillers, and you’re also several thousand dollars poorer from the cost of the surgery and having to take time off work. All for a couple measly kilos?! Doesn’t sound too appealing to me.

On the other hand, in the time it would have taken you to recover from plastic surgery, you could have completed the first Go Sleeveless program. You would have lost over 10-20 lbs of body fat (or more), gained muscle, toned and sculpted your arms, boosted your metabolism, improved your health and cardiovascular fitness, gotten stronger and done it all in the comfort of your own home in less than 90 minutes a week (freeing up even more time for you and your family).

Better yet, there would be no time off work, you wouldn’t have had to endure any pain, and you could live a normal life. Once you really put these two options side to side, why would anyone chose plastic surgery over Go Sleeveless?

Q: Okay, that makes perfect sense. I guess I didn’t realize that surgery was actually like that. I think most of us assume it’s an easy quick fix, but it doesn’t seem to be the case does it?

Rylan: No, it’s definitely not. You see, the plastic surgery industry has been lying to you. Remember, this is a multi-billion dollar industry that preys on people’s insecurities and makes them think that they only way they will ever be happy with their body is do go under the knife.

I was fed up with it, and I was determined to give women a solution to eliminating their problem areas quickly, easily, and without going under the knife. That is how Go Sleeveless was born. I wanted to prove to women that they didn’t need plastic surgery to be happy.

Q: Okay, so what about women who haven’t considered surgery, or aren’t looking for results that are that extreme. Can Go Sleeveless still help them?

Rylan: Absolutely. The reason why I compare my system to plastic surgery, is because for many people, they think that surgery is the ULTIMATE solution. They don’t really think that they can get results that are that good through targeted exercise and a proper nutrition plan. However, even if you would never even consider surgery, but are unhappy with your flabby arms, then this program will without a doubt help you in ways you never thought possible.

Q: All right, that makes sense. I guess we do put plastic surgery up on a pedestal. I guess it is shows like ‘Extreme Makeover’, and ‘The Swan’ that glorify it and make us think that way. So let’s talk a little more about flabby arms. Your program initially started as a solution for women with wanted to eliminate ‘bat-wings’ or flabby and saggy upper arms right? Can you tell me more about how someone using your program will be able to lose them once and for all? And also, what about women who are already in good shape, but still have sagging arms even though they don’t have too much body fat? Can this still help them? Isn’t that just sagging skin that they are stuck with?

Rylan: Those are great questions. Yes Go Sleeveless initially started for a program for just the arms, but in my upcoming 3 day launch sale on February 16th, I have added many new programs to cover every problem part that women routinely deal with.

But regardless of what problem areas you have, I want to make something very clear: Whether you’ve got 1 pound to lose, or 100, the principals are really the same. Burn fat, build muscle, and raise your metabolism, and you will eliminate your problem areas, arms included.

Go Sleeveless accomplishes all three of these tasks. How To Lose Body Fat

The constant struggle - the battle of the bulge. Why is it that you continue to grow in size, month after month, and year after year when we are told that we are finished growing by age 25? My number one diet advice

Just a quick one this morning folks. I've been working like mad on something that is going to be huge. And when I say huge, I MEAN huge.

I will be telling you more about that very soon ;-)

Today, I wanted to share with you a little piece of advice, that although simple, can make an incredible change to your body almost overnight.

And this has to do with diet.

Although the Atkins diet has come and gone for the most part (thank heavens!) it did leave us with one tid-bit of information that is truly valuable.

And that is, GET RID OF STARCH!

What I mean by starch is potato, pasta, flour products of any kind, rice, etc. On top of this, refined carbs like sugar and high-fructose corn syrup and even fruit juice are all ticking time bombs; waiting to make you explode into jean sizes you'll be embarrased to admit you wear.

Now, most people assume that many of these foods are healthy choices. I mean, you would think that a baked potato is great compared to a plate of french fries.

Let me put it like this: Starches are a form of highly condensed energy. Energy that you just simply ARE NOT BURNING. If you have job that required to you be physical all day long (like a farmer, carpenter, laborer etc.) then you can get away with it, but then again, if you have one of these professoins, chances are your weight isn't too much of a problem.

The reality is, our lives are VERY sedentary. Even if you're 'busy' (who isn't) you probably aren't all that physicaly active. And while you do need some carbs to fuel your brain and keep you going throughout the day; the carbs you are getting from fruits and veggies are plenty to accomplish this task.

Quite simply, if you are eating carbs, and you have an inactive lifestyle, those carbs are not being used as energy, and WILL end up as body fat, period.

You need to make a shift from having meat, potatoes, and veggies for dinner, to having a salad, meat, and some cooked veggies.

Resist it as much as you want, but my clients who have the best success are all following this type of plan. This is what my wife and I have been doing for years now, and I can tell you the results were visible nearly overnight.

If you MUST have carbs, eat them only in the morning, and in sensible amounts. After that, focus on fresh fruits and veggies, and protein for the rest of your meals, and you will be amazed at the changes in your body.

Put this in to practise now folks. Don't wait any longer. The sooner you do this, the sooner you will get great results.

The truth about Alli

Don't even go here folks. Not one bit. Do not pass go. Do not collect 200 dollars.

You know how people who abuse laxatives are considered bulimic?

Yup, same idea here.

Alli is a pill you take with your meal that binds to fat rendering it incapable of proper digestion.

Here's the process: Take a burger...fat in burger binds to Alli...Alli and fat from burger ends up in toilet.

Eat all the fat you want, and your body won't absorb it. Great huh?

Not really.

Two big problems here.

Number one (well number two actually) is that this causes laxation. Well, to be fair, let me tell you exactly what the manufacturer states: “gas with oily spotting, loose stools, and more frequent stools that may be hard to control.” Sounds like party to me.

The other is that it doesn't do a damn thing about the carbs, sugar, and all the other garbage you might be jamming down your throat.

If you are eating healthy fats like olive oil and fish oils, you'd then be depriving yourself of some incredibly beneficial and healthy nutrients that actually help you BURN fat.

Heart Rate Monitor Recommendation

This is one piece of equipment that I recommend all my clients get. It is imperative that you know your heart rate when you are training to ensure that you are working at a sufficient enough intensity to cause a change in your body. The only way to know this for sure is to wear a heart rate monitor such as this.

All of my programs contain heart rate guideline for the cardio training sections, and trying to take your pulse manually is nearly impossible to do while working out (you will end up with major errors). Therefore all my private clients are instructed to get one of these.

I have seen many different models and prices of monitors, but my favorite continues to be the Polar F4. The price is great, it is easy to use, and it even tracks how many calories you burn during a workout so you can make sure that you are training just as hard each session.

Chin-ups for women

Everyone needs to be able to do a full chin-up, women especially. If you can't, then you need to start trying right away. There are no excuses here, women are every bit as capable of performing this exercise as men, period.

In my experience, the best way to start doing full chin-ups when you can't even manage one, is to do resisted lowering first.

Start by standing on a bench or a chair that lifts you up to the chinning bar, take a good grip on the bar, then step off the bench and try to hang for a second.

Next, try to slowly lower yourself down to the floor. This may not be slow at first, but keep trying and eventually you will get to the point where you can slowly lower yourself all the way to the floor.

Do this as many times as you can in a row, and then once you can complete about 10 controlled lowerings (is that a word?) then try and pull yourself up once.

By doing resisted lowering (or eccentric contractions as we call them in exercise physiology) you actually build more strength than during the concentric phase (or lifting of the weight).

This is why it is so essential to slowly lower your weights when you are doing reps, and not simply dropping them back to the start position, you will miss out on some of your best possible gains.
